About Us

Cushman & Wakefield is a market leader in Atlanta, consistently ranked among the city’s top brokerage firms and property managers since opening the office in 1977. Over the past 40 years, Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta has grown to employ more than 350 team members in the metro Atlanta area and surrounding Southeast region who provide expertise in all of the company’s vertically integrated services. Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta has previously been named a “Best Place to Work” by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Cushman & Wakefield’s Atlanta operations began when the firm acquired the successful local brokerage operation of Bugg, Coppedge, Ghertner & McWilliams (“BCGM”) on November 4, 1977. BCGM was comprised of top producers formerly with Adair Realty Co., at that time Atlanta’s oldest commercial real estate firm.

The acquisition of BCGM by Cushman & Wakefield was part of an overall trend in Atlanta during the late 1970s, as the city began to outpace its Southeastern peers in terms of population and office market growth. As Atlanta grew into its role as the region’s economic and business capital, other national commercial real estate firms also entered the market through acquisitions.

During the 1980s, Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta represented some of Atlanta’s largest tenants with their office space needs and became known as the city’s “go to” firm for large, complex lease negotiations. The firm also established strong practices in the areas of investment sales, agency leasing, and property appraisals.

Mike Elting, who joined the firm in 1979, was named market leader in 1984 and served in this role for 27 years. Under Mr. Elting’s guidance, Cushman & Wakefield cemented its consistent position as one of Atlanta’s biggest and most successful commercial real estate service providers.

In early 2012, John O’Neill became Cushman & Wakefield’s Atlanta market leader, ushering in a new era of growth. Since he took over the strategic management of the office, Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta has added more than 100 new team members by recruiting top talent and making strategic acquisitions. The firm continues to play a vital role in local real estate, being responsible for some of the city’s highest-profile transactions and helping Atlanta solidify its role as a key global business center.

Much of Cushman & Wakefield’s success in Atlanta is due to the unique collaborative culture that has been carefully fostered in the office since its inception. In an industry historically known for entrepreneurs and individual success, Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta was among the first commercial real estate firms to embrace the power of teamwork and shared information.

As a result, Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta is home to some of the most tenured professionals in the city. Andy Ghertner, who was part of the local brokerage operation Cushman & Wakefield acquired in 1977, is still an active tenant broker today, serving both his blue-chip list of clients, as well as being a mentor to the firm’s younger professionals. With nearly 30 employees having been a part of Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta for more than 15 years, there is no other firm in Atlanta with a comparable length of tenure among its staff.

In late 2013, Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta decided to better define what makes the office so unique in the market. Teams of established professionals and new employees met to discuss the Cushman & Wakefield local culture and how to describe it. With ready acceptance from the entire office, the following “guiding principles” were defined so that they could serve as a roadmap for the future and ensure the longevity of what makes Cushman & Wakefield Atlanta special.

  • Pride: Be passionate for what we do, and demand the best of yourself and your co-workers.
  • Integrity: Do the right thing with uncompromising ethics and character.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate, share and commit to helping others succeed.
  • Respect: Be open, honest and mindful of others, our work and our community.
  • Excellence: Do more, be more, give more.

“We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.” — Winston Churchill
